My family’s farm in West-Central Illinois is probably my favorite place in the world. Sitting on the front porch with my family sipping on terrible cheap beer and watching the deer run through the fields and/or waving at everyone who drives by on the country road, laughing a ridiculous amount…it’s pretty perfect!
Glad I’ve been able to share some Caboozings with you! Thanks for writing this piece and happy Substack birthday!
A family favorite is Lake Cumberland, KY! But I think, more often, as you say, "it’s the people that I return to each spot with, year after year, that make the experience of being there so unforgettable."
This was such a warm hug! My family has been going down to Marco Island in Florida since my grandparents in the 70s. It’s always 1000 degrees but the vodka/Fresca cocktails and the grouper sandwiches always go down so nicely. It’s been so fun bringing my nieces/nephews down so a new Thome generation can play mermaids in the pool and race to press the elevator buttons.
I love this, it really is special sharing those family traditions with the nieces and nephews! and I love that the elevator button race is timeless, haha
I read this as I'm sitting ring-side under the massive trees shading the Draft Horse Show at the Sandwich Fair, the hometown fair I've attended my entire life and which is the defining line between summer and fall. The buildings full of judged entries, commercial goods, and animals are now the joy while the Midway is to be avoided, but the entire thing is such a pleasure to experience for 3 days with my family as we eat and laugh our way thru the grounds. Truly the best tradition, and memories, of the season!

Yes, house boating is so fun and the lake is so nice! Loved your river and lake stories!

Lake Cumberland is a beautiful area! That's a great spot for a family trip.

Happy second substack birthday!
